Water Leak Detector — Acoustic Ground Microphone

The Water Leak Detector is an acoustic listening device used to detect and locate water leaks in buried mains, service connections, and distribution pipes by amplifying the characteristic noise of pressurised water escaping through a pipe defect. The ground microphone or probe is placed on the road surface, valve boxes, or pipe access points, and the amplified leak noise is heard through headphones — enabling the operator to pinpoint the leak before excavation.

JS Civil Lab Solutions supplies acoustic water leak detectors for water utilities, municipal corporations, and plumbing contractors performing non-excavation leak surveys on distribution networks.

Technical Specifications

  • Sensor: High-sensitivity ground microphone or probe (interchangeable)
  • Frequency response: 10 Hz – 3,500 Hz (with adjustable low-pass/high-pass filter)
  • Amplification: Variable gain, 40–80 dB
  • Output: Headphone audio + digital signal strength bar
  • Filter: Selectable for plastic and metallic pipe noise profiles
  • Recording: Built-in audio logger for post-survey review (model-dependent)
  • Applications: DI, GI, MS, HDPE, PVC, asbestos cement distribution pipes

Acoustic Leak Detection Procedure

Walk the pipe route, stopping every 2–5 m to listen. Leak noise intensity peaks directly above the defect. For buried metallic pipes, the probe tip can be inserted into the soil to improve signal. Use the built-in filter to suppress background noise from traffic or wind. Combine with a Leak Noise Correlator (ID 501) to precisely locate leaks on long sections between access points.
