Leak Noise Correlator — Pipeline Leak Detection

The Leak Noise Correlator is an acoustic device used to precisely locate leaks in buried water mains, pressurised gas pipelines, district heating pipes, and any pressurised distribution network. Two vibration sensors are attached to pipe access points (valves, fire hydrants, or meter boxes), and the correlator computes the exact leak position by measuring the time delay of the leak noise arriving at each sensor.

Technical Specifications

  • Method: Cross-correlation of acoustic noise signals from two sensors
  • Sensors: Magnetic or clamp-type vibration transducers
  • Frequency range: 10 Hz – 3,500 Hz (adjustable band-pass filter)
  • Pipe material filter: Metal, plastic (HDPE/PVC), AC, concrete pipe presets
  • Communication: Radio link (433 MHz / 868 MHz) or Bluetooth
  • Display: Handheld unit with correlation graph and pipe length input
  • Leak location accuracy: ±0.5 m on pipes up to 500 m apart
  • Applications: DI, CI, MS, HDPE, PVC, asbestos cement pipelines

How Correlation Works

Leak noise travels as a sound wave along the pipe at a speed determined by pipe material, diameter, and fluid. The correlator measures arrival time difference (Δt) at both sensors and, knowing the distance between sensors (L), calculates: Leak distance from Sensor A = (L − v × Δt) / 2, where v is pipe sound velocity.
