Slump Cone – Concrete Workability Test Apparatus

The Slump Cone (Abrams cone) is the standard apparatus for the concrete slump test — the simplest and most widely used method to assess the workability (consistency) of fresh concrete at construction sites and RMC plants. JS Civil Lab Solutions supplies MS and GI slump cones compliant with IS 7320 and IS 1199.

Slump Test Procedure (Brief)

  1. Place the dampened slump cone on a flat, non-absorbent surface
  2. Fill with fresh concrete in three equal layers, tamping each with 25 blows of the tamping rod
  3. Strike off the top level and carefully lift the cone vertically
  4. Measure the slump (fall in height of concrete from the top of the cone)

Slump Values and Workability

  • 0–25 mm: Very low workability — dry mix, mass concrete
  • 25–50 mm: Low — roads and pavements
  • 50–100 mm: Medium — normal RCC structures
  • 100–175 mm: High — columns, beams with dense rebar
  • >175 mm: Very high — self-compacting concrete

Slump Cone Specifications (IS 7320)

  • Top diameter: 100 mm
  • Bottom diameter: 200 mm
  • Height: 300 mm
  • Material: Mild steel (MS), minimum 1.5 mm thick
  • Foot pieces: Two, welded
  • Tamping rod: 600 mm long, 16 mm dia, hemispherical tip
