Pipe and Cable Locator — Underground Utility Detection

The Pipe and Cable Locator is an electromagnetic detection system used to locate and trace buried metallic pipes, electrical cables, and telecom conduits before excavation — preventing accidental utility strikes that cause service outages, injuries, and costly repairs. The transmitter applies a signal to the buried utility, and the receiver detects the resulting electromagnetic field above ground, indicating the line position and depth.

Technical Specifications

  • Detection methods: Active (transmitter-applied signal) + Passive (power line/radio frequency detection)
  • Frequency range: 50 Hz, 512 Hz, 8 kHz, 33 kHz, 65 kHz (multi-frequency)
  • Depth range: Up to 5 m (active mode, depending on signal coupling)
  • Depth accuracy: ±10% of depth at peak signal
  • Display: Depth readout, signal strength bar, locate mode indicator
  • Passive mode: Detects energised power cables without transmitter connection
  • Audio: Variable tone for rapid line tracing
  • Standards: EN 50160, IEC 62271

Modes of Operation

Direct connection: Clip transmitter to pipe/cable access point for precise tracing. Induction clamp: Clamp around cable without breaking circuit — ideal for inaccessible cables. Signal induction: Transmitter placed on ground above utility — no physical connection needed. Passive: Detect live power lines using their natural 50 Hz emission.
