U Box — Self-Compacting Concrete Passing Ability Test

The U Box is used to evaluate the passing ability and filling capacity of Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) as per EFNARC guidelines and IS 1199 Part 6. The apparatus consists of a U-shaped vessel divided into two compartments by a partition with gaps at the base fitted with reinforcing bars. Fresh SCC is poured into one compartment and the gate is opened — the height difference (H2 − H1) between the filled compartment and the other side indicates passing ability and filling performance.

SCC Test Battery

U Box is used alongside Slump Flow (T500), V-Funnel, and L-Box tests to characterise SCC fresh properties. Minimum U Box filling ratio (H2/H1) of ≥ 0.9 indicates good passing ability for congested reinforcement. JS Civil Lab supplies the full SCC test kit.
