An Air Entrainment Meter measures the percentage of entrained air in freshly mixed concrete — a critical parameter for concrete that must resist freeze-thaw cycles, improve workability, or meet specified air content limits. The test is performed by the pressure method per IS 1199:1959 (Method 6) and ASTM C231, using a sealed pressure vessel calibrated to indicate the air content directly on a pressure gauge. Entrained air content of 4–8% is specified for frost-resistant concrete in cold climates and high-altitude infrastructure projects. What Is an Air Entrainment Meter?

An air entrainment meter — also called an air content meter or concrete air meter — is a laboratory and field instrument used to measure the percentage of entrained air voids in fresh concrete immediately after mixing. It operates on the pressure method, using Boyle’s Law (pressure-volume relationship of air) to determine air content without needing to measure concrete density.

Entrained air is intentionally introduced into concrete using chemical admixtures (air-entraining agents) to improve freeze-thaw resistance, workability, and durability in aggressive environments.
