This is used to determine the viscosity of slurry, grout, and similar fluid materials by measuring the flow time under gravity. It provides a quick and reliable indication of fluid consistency for quality control and field testing.
The funnel has a top diameter of 6 inches and an overall length of 11 inches (280 mm). It tapers uniformly to connect with a discharge tube 2 inches long, having an internal diameter of 3/16 inch. The total capacity of the funnel is 1500 cc.
Viscosity is determined by measuring the time in seconds required for 1000 cc of slurry to flow out of the cone through the standardised orifice. This flow time is expressed as the material’s funnel viscosity.
The Marsh Cone Funnel is widely used in construction, geotechnical, and civil engineering applications for assessing the workability and flow behaviour of cementitious and drilling fluid mixtures.
