What Is an Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Tester?

An Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Tester — commonly called a UPV tester or UPV meter — is a non-destructive testing instrument that measures the speed at which ultrasonic sound pulses travel through concrete. Higher pulse velocity indicates denser, stronger, more uniform concrete; lower velocity indicates cracks, voids, honeycombing, or deterioration. The ultrasonic pulse velocity test is the most widely used NDT method for concrete quality assessment in India, specified under IS 13311 (Part 1):1992.

UPV Tester — Transmission Modes Explained

  • Direct (Opposite Faces): Transmitter on one face, receiver on the opposite face. Most accurate — used on beams, columns, and wall sections where both faces are accessible.
  • Semi-Direct (Adjacent Faces): Transmitter and receiver on adjacent (90°) faces. Used when only one face is fully accessible.
  • Indirect / Surface (Same Face): Both transducers on the same surface with increasing spacing. Used on slabs and when only one face is accessible. Slightly less accurate.
