What Is a Rebar Cover Meter?

A rebar cover meter — also called a cover depth gauge or reinforcement locator — is a non-destructive testing instrument that locates steel reinforcement bars (rebar) embedded inside concrete, measures the depth of concrete cover over the bars, and estimates the rebar diameter. It uses electromagnetic principles (pulse induction or magnetic reluctance) to detect the steel without any drilling, coring, or surface damage.

Minimum concrete cover is a critical structural and durability requirement under IS 456:2000. Insufficient cover causes premature rebar corrosion, concrete spalling, and structural failure.
