Bursting Strength Tester – Mullen Type for Paper and Packaging

The Bursting Strength Tester (Mullen Type) measures the resistance of paper, paperboard, and packaging materials to rupture under hydraulic pressure applied at a controlled rate through a rubber diaphragm. Bursting strength (in kPa or kg/cm²) is a primary specification for corrugated box board, kraft paper, and industrial packaging materials.

How the Mullen Burst Test Works

1. A circular specimen is clamped between two annular clamps with a 30.5 mm (1.2 in) circular test area exposed
2. Hydraulic pressure is applied below the specimen at a rate of approximately 170 mL/min, expanding a rubber diaphragm upward
3. Pressure is measured at the instant of rupture
4. Result is reported as bursting strength in kPa or kgf/cm²

• Test area: 30.5 mm (1.2 in) diameter
• Hydraulic fluid: Glycerine
• Pressure range: 0–700 kPa (models for high-strength boards: 0–1200 kPa)
• Pressure indicator: Analogue gauge with maximum pointer, or digital display
• Diaphragm: Natural rubber, replaceable
• Clamping pressure: 3.5 kgf/cm² (pneumatic or manual)
