Elmendorf Tearing Strength Tester — Paper Tear Resistance

The Elmendorf Tearing Strength Tester measures the energy required to tear paper, board, tissue, and film through a specified distance (43 mm) after an initial slit cut as per ISO 1974, TAPPI T414, IS 1060 Part 4, and ASTM D1922. The pendulum-type instrument releases a fixed mass from a set height; the energy absorbed in tearing is indicated on the scale as tearing force in millinewtons (mN) or grammes-force (gf).

Tear Index

Tear index (mN·m²/g) = (Tearing force in mN × 1,000) / GSM. This normalises tear strength to basis weight, allowing comparison across paper grades. Newsprint typically 4–6 mN·m²/g; kraft liner 8–15 mN·m²/g; tissue 3–8 mN·m²/g depending on furnish.
