GSM Cutter — Paper Weight Specimen Cutting

The GSM Cutter (Grammage Sample Cutter) is used to cut a precise area of paper or board for GSM (grammes per square metre) determination as per ISO 536, TAPPI T410, IS 1060 Part 1, and BS 3983. The circular or square cutter produces specimens of exact known area (typically 100 cm²), which are then weighed on an analytical balance. GSM = (weight in grams / area in m²) — a fundamental property for all paper and packaging grades.

GSM Testing Procedure

Condition samples at 23 ± 1°C, 50 ± 2% RH for at least 4 hours (IS 1060). Cut 10 specimens from different positions across the web (avoiding edges). Weigh on analytical balance (0.001 g resolution). Calculate: GSM = (mean weight in mg × 10,000) / cutting area in cm². Report to nearest 1 g/m².
