Blaine Air Permeability Apparatus — Cement Fineness Testing

The Blaine Air Permeability Apparatus is used to determine the specific surface area (fineness) of cement, fly ash, GGBS, and other fine powders by measuring the rate of air flow through a compacted bed of the material as per IS 4031 Part 2, IS 1489, and ASTM C204. Cement fineness directly influences hydration rate, early strength gain, setting time, and workability — making it a critical QC parameter at cement plants and concrete labs.

OPC (IS 269): Minimum 225 m²/kg. PPC (IS 1489): Minimum 300 m²/kg. GGBS (IS 12089): Minimum 400 m²/kg. Higher fineness generally means faster strength gain but increased water demand and potential for cracking in mass concrete.
