The Tablet Hardness Tester measures the crushing strength (breaking force) of pharmaceutical tablets as per USP <1217>, IP, and BP specifications. A tablet is placed between two jaws, and the instrument applies a continuously increasing compressive force until the tablet fractures. The peak force at fracture (in Newtons or kiloponds) is recorded as the tablet hardness — a key QC parameter controlling tablet friability, disintegration time, and dissolution rate.

Typical tablet hardness targets: 40–80 N for standard-release tablets, 80–150 N for film-coated tablets, 100–200 N for extended-release matrix tablets. Low hardness causes capping and friability failures; high hardness slows disintegration. The hardness tester is tested alongside the disintegration tester (ID 1110) and friability tester (ID 1114) as a complementary tablet QC set.
