The Friability Tester is used to determine the mechanical strength and resistance to abrasion of uncoated tablets as per USP <1216>, IP, and BP specifications. Tablets are tumbled in a rotating drum (hexagonal or cylindrical) at 25 rpm for 4 minutes (100 rotations), and the percentage weight loss (friability) is measured. Acceptable friability is typically ≤1.0% for most tablet formulations.

De-dust and weigh tablets, load into drum, run 100 rotations, de-dust and re-weigh. Calculate: Friability (%) = [(Initial weight − Final weight) / Initial weight] × 100. Reject batch if friability > 1%.
