A Concrete Cylinder Mould is a precision-manufactured cylindrical steel mould used to cast concrete test specimens for compressive strength testing. The standard size for IS 516 (India) is 150 mm diameter × 300 mm height; ASTM C31 (USA) uses 100 mm × 200 mm or 150 mm × 300 mm cylinders. Cylinder specimens are used instead of cubes for ASTM-method concrete testing and for correlation studies. What Is a Concrete Cylinder Mould?

A concrete cylinder mould is a precision-manufactured cylindrical mould — typically made from cast iron, mild steel, or high-strength steel — used to cast concrete test specimens that are later tested in a Compression Testing Machine (CTM) to determine the compressive strength of concrete. Unlike cube moulds (which are standard in Indian practice under IS 516), cylinder moulds are specified for ASTM-method testing and for correlation work between Indian and international standards.

How to Use a Concrete Cylinder Mould — IS 516 Procedure

  1. Clean and oil the inside of the mould to prevent concrete adhesion
  2. Assemble the mould and tighten wing-nut clamps securely
  3. Fill concrete in two or three equal layers, tamping each layer with a tamping rod (25 strokes per layer for 150mm cylinder)
  4. Level the top surface and cover with a damp cloth or plastic sheet
  5. After 24 hours initial curing, demould and transfer to water curing tank at 27°C ± 2°C
  6. Test at 7 days and 28 days in a Compression Testing Machine (CTM) per IS 516
